I used to play tennis non-stop as a child. Playing in tournaments all around the state. Playing with boys, girls, grownups, and kids half my age with double my skill-set. It didn’t matter to me, I would go out there swinging!
I would channel my inner Maria Sharapova and picture myself at Wimbledon one day. But clearly (like most children’s wild dreams) that didn’t happen. Instead, life got in the way.
I went to college, graduated, moved to a cold state (shout out to DC that’s currently 47 degrees), and tennis just fell off my radar.
One day this summer is when that all changed.
The boyfriend and I were visiting my parents in Sarasota and the idea of tennis was brought up. My father, boyfriend, and I all got out on the court and slapped the ball around a bit with my mother as our cheerleader and ball girl! It was a beautiful day, I didn’t play tooooo badly, and I had a blast.
That’s when the tennis bug bit me again :)
The boyfriend and I have played every weekend since that day. We have a standing 9am Sunday morning court reservation.
We’re lucky enough to live only a few minutes from Crandon Park Tennis Center on Key Biscayne where they hold the Miami Open. It’s such an amazing facility and you can even reserve center court to practice on (only $13/person!). We always feel very official as we walk out onto the court early Sunday morning, pretending the stands are filled with people. Thankfully they aren’t, or else they would see our sub-par swings :)
Maybe it’s the great weather in Miami, maybe it’s the great tennis facility, maybe it’s because I’m slightly better than the boyfriend and enjoy kicking his butt :) Whatever it is, tennis is back in my life and I couldn’t be happier!
What did you love to do as a child, but haven’t done since? I challenge you to do it!
It could be reading, running, or playing a board game. Maybe it’s singing or playing an instrument. Even if you are horrible at it today (like I was that day I picked up a racquet for the first time in years), I promise it will come back to you!
It’s also a great excuse to go shopping… an excuse I’m always looking for. A girl can always shop! These four outfits are calling my name since right now I’m rocking tennis dresses from high school :)
If I get out on the court for two more weeks in a row I think I’m going to treat myself to one of them :)
