Relaxing. Enjoyable. And so needed.
My wonderful sister picked up The Red Notebook by Antoine Laurain for me at the Oxford Exchange in Tampa, FL. I was beyond jealous she went to this restaurant/bookstore, but thrilled to have a book hand-selected by her! Little did she know how much of a winner she had plucked off the shelf.
I will admit, I’m sometimes a bit cynical… not always believing the kindness of others or fate. But this book made me rethink it all.
A light and easy book, ideally read on the beach with a cool cocktail in hand… at least that’s how I read it!
Here is a high-level summary: On a morning walk Laurent Letellier, a Parisian bookseller, comes across a handbag cast aside in the trash. He thought it odd since there were still items in it, but could not find any clear indication as to who the bag belonged to. As Laurent tried to piece together the puzzle, sorting through the contents for clues, he becomes drawn to this woman he has never met and determined to find her.
There are 4 reasons that I absolutely loved this book and recommend it as your first packed item for your summer vacation:
1) It’s an easy read.
This isn’t a book that if you let your mind wander while reading (or pick it up and put down 100 times) you have to reread.
2) It’s setting gives you major wanderlust.
Hello, you’re following Laurent through Parisian streets, bookstores, and cafés. Fly me away now, Paris is calling my name!
3) There are no unnecessary twists just for the sake of having twists.
I hate those books that are boring so the author randomly throws in a lesbian interaction (example of that here… it really boils my blood).
4) It will restore your faith in humanity.
This book will make you realize there are still good people in this world. We all need that reminder after we’ve been cut off by one too many people, had a poor customer service experience, or just saw someone throw trash on the ground.
If you are going on a vacation, pack this book! It may be a bit predictable, but in the way that romantic comedies are predictable. You know what will happen, but you still love it anyways.
What books would you recommend to bring on vacation?
