Oh Ruth Ware, why do you do this to me? I have such mixed feelings about your writing.
I first came across her writing through In a Dark, Dark Wood and (as you can see from the review) I was sadly disappointed. It was slow, lacked suspense, and there were too many moments I wanted to yell to the characters “Just do something already!”.
Then she came out of nowhere and blew my socks off with The Woman in Cabin 10! The frequent thrilling scenes had me up at night reading (and then sleeping with the lights on). After that book I was convinced Ruth’s first book was just a fluke.
So when I picked up her latest thriller, The Lying Game, I was ready to be on the edge of my seat just like the last time.
Unfortunately since I did not like either of those two book, you can see why The Lying Game did nothing for me. Such a long story, such lack of excitement, too many unnecessary details and scenery changes, and drawn out monologues by the main character.

CAUTION: this is a spoiler, go to the next paragraph if you want to skip it!
One HUGE thing that bothered me , she wrote off her marriage after one small argument! What kind of wife is she? Literally it had been 6 years and she had never thought she wasn’t happy and then all of a sudden one fight and she picks up the baby and heads out the door to get entangled with another man. It just makes no logical sense to me.

I know some people are big Ruth Ware fans, and I totally support your decision. I’m just not one of those people and would only give this book a 3 out of 5 stars. If you do decide to start this book then you have to make sure you finish it because all of the action is at the very… very end.
I think I have learned my lesson, Ruth Ware books are just not for me. What are your thoughts?
