What. A. Book. Phew!
A true psychological thriller that was beyond disturbing! There were double lives, gut-wrenching events, plot twists, and some amazingly strong women.
Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter is as addictive as Gone Girl (seriously, not joking) but even darker… as dark as dark gets! The two books don’t have similar storylines, but the range of emotions I had while reading them were spot on.
I won’t lie, Pretty Girls gave me a few nightmares though…
Here is a short and sweet summary:
A 19 year old girl disappeared from her college campus (run away or taken against her will?), leaving her parents and two older sisters behind to question what happened.
Fast forward 20 years later, and still no answers or body from the lost girl have surfaced. News reports of another missing girl haunt the, now adult, sisters as they flash back to their childhood and sister they never got to say goodbye to.
There are shocking similarities between the two disappearances, even though they are decades apart, and the stories begin to become one as secrets and lies start to unravel.
The girls are faced with a horrifying truth as they end up being drawn into the exact same situation the missing girls were all to easily by people they once trusted. Revenge is on everyone’s mind now.
I listened to this on Audible and I won’t lie, during some of the more “intense scenes” (if you’ve read the book then you know what I’m referring to) I had to turn the volume wayyyyy downnnnn so I didn’t have to hear all of the specifics that were happening because…. eek!!!
I’ve never ready anything else by Karin Slaughter, let alone even heard of her before, but all of the other reviews I read mentioned how amazing of an author she is. I’m already researching the next book of hers I will read! Because seriously, I’m in awe of her crazy, triller writing! Then again, her last name is “Slaughter”… is that a coincidence??
This book will make your stomach turn in horror but I couldn’t recommend it enough! As long as you are prepared for some graphic shock….
Overall rating: 4.75 out of 5
If you aren’t faint-hearted, and aren’t too squeamish, get reading my friends!
Have you read this amazing thriller yet? Or have any other ones to recommend?
