I’m sure by now everyone has listened to, or at least heard of, Serial. It’s a podcast that blew up overnight! Just like millions of others, I got sucked in by the popularity and downloaded a podcast for the first time in my life.
Be warned, this series will make you think about nothing else but the case the whole time you are listening. I would find myself getting lost in thought during a meeting at work, wondering if Jay and Hae had some sort of love affair, if Adnan Syed would ever try and help Sarah Koenig more with where he was that day (he bothered me a bit, I felt like he wasn’t being very helpful most of the time), or if maybe Hae’s death was completely unrelated to both boys…
For some background about Serial before I go too far off on my rant, here is a bit about the podcast:
Serial is a podcast from the creators of This American Life, and is hosted by Sarah Koenig. Serial tells one story – a true story – over the course of an entire season. Each season, we’ll follow a plot and characters wherever they take us. And we won’t know what happens at the end until we get there, not long before you get there with us. Each week we bring you the next chapter in the story, so it’s important to listen to the episodes in order, starting with Episode 1.
I had very high hopes for this podcast series. I, just like many of my friends, binge listened to every episode, finishing the whole season in just a matter of days. I was hooked after the first episode, and before I knew it I had listened to 4 episodes in a row and was convinced I knew who the killer was.
The murder is a true story, so there is no room for embellishment. You get the cold hard facts, real recordings from the trial over a decade ago, and present day phone conversations between Adnan and Sarah.
I won’t reveal too much in this blog post but I do want to warn you, don’t expect a clear answer at the end of the season. That drove me crazy. I wanted to know what really happened when I finished the season (like most people). I wanted answers. It was as if I had read a crazy thriller, murder mystery novel and I thought the last page of the book would tell me who did it… but it didn’t.
The investigation is still going on now and there is new evidence that could open up all new cans of worms… I just wish that the investigation over the last year would have lead to some hard facts that would either free or seal the door to Adnan’s jail cell.
So, do I think Adnan did it? I don’t know… do you?
