My morning routine is VERY different than it used to be in DC.
In DC, I would be up at 5am to squeeze out every minute I had by myself. I would scroll Blogovin’, reply to comments, and finish writing/ publishing my post for the day. Before I know it, it was 6:45am and I needed to start getting ready for my actual day job.
In Miami, things are quite a bit different. Basically add a boyfriend to my apartment and subtract a job. Instead of waking up at 5am to jam everything into my morning, now I focus on getting the boyfriend up, fed, and out the door by 8:30am. Then it’s all day “me” time!
We live in a loft apartment so when the alarm goes off at 6:45am I’m the one to scurry down the stairs and hunt for the glowing Nespresso maker button. While I wait for every last drop of caffeine/liquid heaven to go into the cups, I tidy up a bit in the kitchen and pull out dishes for the boyfriend’s breakfast. I run back upstairs to the warm bed (we keep the apartment at 68 degrees at night, so sprinting is really the only way unless you want to freeze) where we chit chat over coffee about out upcoming day.
By 7:30am I’m back downstairs in workout clothes whipping up 6 scrabbled eggs with a side of Oily Perfect Men’s Multi Vitamins (they taste like candy and we’re obsessed with them). When the eggs are ready I switch meal modes and pack the boyfriend’s lunch; a chicken or ham sandwich, some kind of fruit, and a snack. I keep reminding him he is being spoiled now, but once I start working again things will be changing…
He comes downstairs at 8am in a whirlwind, inhales breakfast, we exchange a kiss, and he is out the door at 8:30am on the dot with his homemade lunch in hand :)
I whip up my second coffee and reach for my phone. My mom is poised and ready at 8:30am to receive her daily call from me where we chat about the weather, activities we have planned for the day, and of course what we plan to make for dinner that evening (90% chance it’s salmon or steaks)
No later than 9am I’m off the phone and tidy up a bit more; make the bed, organize the bathroom, and pick up the boyfriend’s discarded coffee cup he has left somewhere around the apartment…
By 9:15am I’m settled in my blogging nook (strategically located right next to my wine fridge for tough days) and open up my computer. If I haven’t posted my blog for the day, I frantically draft and publish asap (like today for example). If I had it scheduled then I begin the usual blogging activities over my third cup of coffee (but let’s be serious, scheduling these things never happens for some reason).
By 10am I start to get distracted so I whip up some breakfast and enjoy it over a few chapters of the latest book I’m reading. Right now I’m 30 pages into A Hundred Summers by Beatriz Williams so the jury is still out on how I feel about it, but I’ll keep you posted!
Around 10:30am I’m back online doing my daily job hunting (this relaxed carefree life can’t last too long… this girl wants a paycheck!). Mind you, every 15 minutes of every day I’m compulsively checking my email for any word from a potential employer. My phone is usually dead by late afternoon because of all the on/off clicks and email refreshes.
Around 11:30am, feeling either energized or discouraged from my job hunting, I head to the gym to burn off the stress or capitalize on the boost!
I won’t lie, my mornings are much more relaxing now that I’m not having to rush around to get to the office by 8am, but I do get a bit bored… ok, a LOT bored. I’m not made for down-time, so this week I’m trying to make myself an afternoon schedule to stick to so I’m not staring at the wine fridge at 4:59pm waiting for that minute hand to click to 5pm to make it socially acceptable for a glass :)
How smooth do your mornings run? Are you up at 5am like I used to be? Or hitting the snooze button a few too many times?
