Ok, that may be a bit dramatic. But it was a pretty big deal for me!
You know how you can hire a “companion” for older people? Someone just to sit with a grandparent and keep them entertained or socially engaged a few times a week?
Or how you can pay a teenager $15 a hour to babysit and play with your kids while you hit the town with your husband for an evening out?
Where is the companion/babysitter for young adults who are unemployed, just moved to a new city, and are too scared to explore alone???
For the past few weeks of funemployment while the boyfriend has been at work, I’ve basically not gone further than the Publix which is half a block away from our apartment.
Yes, 12 hours inside my apartment alone Monday through Friday and I’m only brave enough to walk a block away. If you couldn’t tell, I’m not a very brave person and I really don’t like doing things alone. Like REALLY don’t like it.
But yesterday I finally said “Enough is enough!”
Ok, that’s a total lie…..
The boyfriend said “Enough is enough!” and said that I HAD to get out of the house, get in my car, and actually go somewhere.
I said “sure sure” and blew him off like I had been doing to that statement since we moved there and he went off on his first day of work.
Well yesterday was different. He laid down the law. He said he wanted documentation of me somewhere… and the grocery store didn’t count.
So I did what every basic, unemployed girl would do in this case. I turned to google maps and typed in “best coffee shop in Miami”.
Panther Coffee here I come!
I may have taken four wrong turns, gone through one VERY sketchy neighborhood, and circled the same parking spot in Wynwood three times before having the confidence to turn on my blinker and parallel park. But, I. DID. IT!
To celebrate, I figured an extra large coconut, chocolate, and pecan cookie was in order :) Which paired nicely with my nitro cold brew. (No, it’s not a beer in the picture… just coffee. But let me tell you, my frazzled self could have used a beer!)
But the moral of the story is that I did it! I got out of the house. Got in my car. Drove somewhere new. And explored all by myself :) And the photos were sent to the boyfriend who was over the moon about my adventure. You know someone really gets you when they are proud that you went to a coffee shop alone :)
Since I survived yesterday, I’ve organized a new big adventure for today! It’s even further away from the house, a car required, social interaction required, and even physical exercise required…. Today I’m trying out an adult tennis clinic on Key Biscayne!
The people in the class may think I’m there to work on my stokes… which I kind of am… but really it’s to make friends. I don’t discriminate by age or gender. If an 80 year old man wants to be my new tennis buddy, bring it on! Game set match!
How do you explore new places alone? Any tips or tricks to looking less awkward and panicked? :)
