I’m late to the game on this one. Girl at War by Sara Nović came out in 2015 and I’m just now raving about it.
Let me just say, Sara Nović can write! This book was tragically sad but phenomenally written. It is fiction, but reads like a memoir.
This is one of those books that does not fit my usual reading genre. It’s a war book, but not WWII (my usual go to). It’s about a war that I honestly knew little about. When I think of Croatia, I think of a beautiful country I want to visit on vacation. I don’t think about guerrilla warfare and child soldiers.
In the novel, when Ana moves to the US, she quickly realizes she needs to keep her past silent. This is not just for her own sake so she doesn’t have to think about it, but because others don’t and won’t understand. They never lived in a world of war. It never happened in their backyard. They were never given a gun and thrown in the back of a truck. Because of this, Ana’s story went unspoken for years…
Until one day she decided to face it. No spoilers… but OMG the ending! I have to know more, Sara!
This book was on my bookshelf for two years and I’m so happy I finally picked it up. If you’re looking for a book that is out of the ordinary, has an amazingly strong female character, and teaches you a bit of world history then this should be your next read.
What book should I pick up next?
