I recently posted about the three thrillers I can’t wait to read in 2017. As I started to research the books for the post, I began to crave a good thriller and had to pick one of them up right then and there.
I mean, just read to first paragraph of the Goodreads summary of Everything You Want Me to Be by Mindy Mejia:
Full of twists and turns, Everything You Want Me to Be reconstructs a year in the life of a dangerously mesmerizing young woman, during which a small town’s darkest secrets come to the forefront…and she inches closer and closer to her death.
I won’t give way any spoilers, but this book really did have some great shock and awe moments! I love when I don’t see something coming and am blindsided by who did what.
But at the same time, I felt the character development left a bit to be desired. Maybe it’s because I couldn’t relate to the main character, high school senior Hattie Hoffman, at all. Maybe it’s because I looked down on her unconcerned parents. Or maybe it’s because the high school setting was a bit too much of a flashback to one of my least favorite reads ever, Luckiest Girl Alive.
All in all, I won’t go as far as telling someone not to read this book, since I’m sure some people will be able to relate to Hattie more which I think would have made this book 5 stars.
But if you, like me, are looking for something more than a young adult novel, pass this one up and instead read this amazing thriller.
All in all, I give this read a 4 out of 5.
Side note: I’m obsessed with my new pineapple shirt I got from Make Me Chic! I never used to be into graphic t-shirts, but for some reason this one just spoke to me :) Maybe it’s because in Miami there is no winter and every day feels like summer, so pineapples fit in perfectly.
P.S. Did you spot my hand scar?? It was it’s official debut on the blog today (eek!)
