By the time I leave work around 6pm, I quickly lose motivation to head to the gym. Instead I have pjs, dinner, and wine on my mind…
After one too many missed evening gym sessions, I decided to switch up my workout routine a bit (more like I HAD to switch up my workout routine)! Now when my alarm goes off at 5:30am, I jump out of bed, wiggle into some Lululemon, and head to the gym.
How do I do it? Some days it’s more of a struggle than other days, but here are a few tricks I’ve learned that help set me up for a successful gym session!
1. Set an early bedtime
If you go to bed an hour earlier, you should be able to wake up an hour earlier to workout! Plan your evening so that you set yourself up for success the next morning. Don’t drink too much wine or eat too heavy of a meal the night before. Set your alarm so you have just enough time to get up, get dressed, and get to the gym. The more “snooze” time you give yourself in the morning, the higher the risk is of snoozing a bit toooo long.
2. Blast the jams
What/ who get’s your body moving? I have a few favorites. Whatever the song is, set it as your alarm clock and create a killer playlist with it. Start blaring it the moment you wake up to get your blood pumping and your foot tapping!
3. Have a partner in crime
Like all tough things, it’s easier to do with someone else. A friend holds you accountable, is extra motivation, and is a buddy for those dark, chilly mornings your bed is sweet talking you into skipping the gym.
4. Dress to impress
There may be only three other people in the gym in those early hours, but that doesn’t mean you should dress like a slob. Throw on your most stylish workout clothes and strut your stuff. Feeling cute always makes me push just a bit harder when I workout. Make sure to set the clothes aside the night before so you don’t waste any time in the morning trying to decide what to wear. Every minute counts at 5:30am!
5. Hydrate the night before
Don’t drink too much wine the night before, like mentioned above :), and make sure to drink a lot of water! You want to make sure to hit the gym fully hydrated. Drink a glass before sleep and start sipping the moment you wake, so your body has fuel to work with!
6. Reward yourself
Not every day has to be a gym day, especially not a 5:30am gym day! Set goals to workout four or five times a week (whatever you’re comfortable with) and allow yourself the luxury of sleeping in now and again. You can also reward yourself with cookies :) Cookies are great rewards!
