How is it only Wednesday?? I swear I just don’t believe it (I seriously checked the calendar twice)!
What’s even harder to believe is that a week and a half ago I was laying on the beach in the Bahamas without a care in the world (see above… not one care!). Ughs, what I wouldn’t give to be back there right this moment, in a swimsuit, turning off my cell phone, and getting this drink again…
But sadly, real life was calling and it’s back to my busy schedule. That means early morning blogging, late night working on my actual full time job, somehow trying to catch up on adult chores like laundry and taxes, all while trying to have a social life. Yeah… this week has been/is going to remain to be a beast!
In order to stay (partially) sane, I will take at least 20 minutes to do one of the following 4 things each workday this week! On Monday I did #3, yesterday I did #4 :) … this morning I’m doing #1 so I can believe there is eventually an end in sight!
Make a priorities list – This is much different than just a to do list which could include everything from getting your car washed to calling your grandparents. A priorities list is just the urgent action items you need to get done that day. You will then rank them in the order you need to take care of them. Once you have them all listed out, begin crossing them off as you go about your day. It will help you visualize what you’ve accomplished and allow you to see there will soon be an end to the madness!
Call your mom – I do this every morning on my drive to work (since they shut down the Metro in DC today for 24 hours for “safety issues” it may be a longer commute than usual). Moms just know exactly how to help you put it all into perspective and give the best pep talks! Plus sometimes they are willing to help. Ec: Her: “Honey you sound so busy, do you want me to call the insurance company and help solve the issue?”, Me: “OMG I love you!”.
Workout – Getting to the gym and burning off some of my stress is one of the best ways to relax (which seems like it would do the opposite, but I swear it works). Added bonus, it will tire you out so that when you try to go to bed that night, instead of staying up and thinking about all the things you need to do, you will instead fall blissfully asleep :)
Pour yourself a glass(es) of wine – Sometimes what the doctor ordered is just some chill time. Put away the computer, put down your phone and instead pick up a glass (or two) of wine. Enjoy a quiet moment sipping on your tasty glass of adult juice and try to relax a bit. Maybe even enjoy it outdoors on your balcony to get some fresh air as well (since probably you haven’t done much of that this week with your schedule).
Whatever you do to help deal with overwhelming days, make sure to allow time to do just that! So add on your priorities list every day “20 minutes to chill” and then actually chill for those 20 minutes!
I swear, it will completely change your outlook on the day :) Especially if you pick the glass of wine, or even double up and call your mom WHILE you are drinking the glass of wine! Two-fer!
How do you relax when the work/life/the world seems overwhelming?
