It’s the time of New Year’s resolutions, new gym memberships, healthy eating, and so on. Some of these changes will last a week, some a month, and maybe one or two will last the whole year!
Did you know it only takes 21 days to create a habit? If you started on Jan. 1st, then you’re already 5 days in!
I’ve set a number of New Year’s resolutions, but have also set four smaller “changes” to focus on as well in 2017. These aren’t really “goals”, but more little life tweaks to make me a happier and healthier me :)
1. Wear my Apple Watch
I have a love-hate relationship with my Apple Watch. I hate it because I know it doesn’t track my activity the right way. I will go for a 3 mile run and it will say I only ran for 1 mile and burned 75 calories (arg!). But…. I love it because it does actually keep me more active. I like that it reminds me to stand up every hour (something I commonly forget to do while at work). And since it (sadly) doesn’t track my workouts correctly, I find I do a bit extra at the gym just to hit the daily fitness goals.
2. Be more positive
Put me in a cocktail party and I’m the happiest of them all. Smiling ear to ear, making light conversation, and oozing positivity. But, put me in my house after a long day at the office and I’m Miss. Debbie Downer. I’m trying to be more positive when it counts the most (at home with loved ones). I’m trying to leave my stress and worries at the door, so when I’m home I can focus on the good and enjoy the moment.
3. Water. Water. Water.
I adopted this little change towards the end of last year when I bought myself a S’well water bottle. It’s my pride and joy :) I don’t know if it’s the cute design, or the fact that my water stays cold all day, but I now drink water like it’s my job. And what’s crazy, I can actually see the positive impact of being well hydrated. Hello, better skin and stronger workouts! I keep my S’well bottle at work (I got the extra large size, 25 oz.), but I’m contemplating buying another one for home to keep by my bed. I’ve been waking up too many times in the middle of the night to sadly see my cup of water is empty. Belated Christmas gift for myself??
4. Reply right away.
Now this is a bit more of a complicated one to explain, but stick with me. I will be scrolling Instagram and will realize it’s my cousin’s birthday. I set a “mental reminder” to text him at some point in the day to wish him a happy birthday (even though I’m literally holding the phone in my hand at that exact moment). Then the next morning I wake up and realize I completely forgot, #fail… Or my friend will send me a message on Facebook, and although I will read it and mentally reply, I always think, “I’ll message her back later”. Then a week has passed and I finally stumble across it again. Are you getting the picture? I add unwanted stress to my life by not completing these simple tasks when I think about it. And I increase the amount of time they would have taken in the first place. From now on, when I think of someone I need to text a message to, I will pick up my phone and do it right that instant. Or I will reply to a message the first time I read it. Clearly I’m reading it because I have time at that moment, so why not reply at that time as well?? This one may be the hardest of these four little changes for me, but I know it will make the biggest impact!
What little changes are you making in 2017? Also, what fitness tracker do you love to use? Clearly from point #1, I’m desperate for a new one that actually works!
P.S. This green dress I got from MakeMeChic is my new go-to, on-the-run casual day dress! So light weight, low price ($11!), and easy to match with any jacket or shoes. I may or may not have worn it three times last week :)
