It’s 6:45am and I’m setting up my spin bike at Equinox. Sorry for the grainy photo, between bad lighting and the early morning, this photo was not set up for success.
I’ve been to a lot of spin classes and usually within the first two songs I know if the class is going to be a blast or a flop. I won’t lie, Equinox spin classes can be hit or miss, so I usually only do spin on Monday mornings with my main girl, Robin. SoulCycle has a much better track record for me. There was only one time I left unimpressed.
So, what makes a great spin class?
1. The music
Thought #1: No I will not do a 4-minute climb to Bon Iver’s Skinny Love…
Thought #2: Yes, I will turn up my resistance if you play Eminem’s Till I Collapse!
Thought #3: I will go a touch faster if you turn Ed Sheeran up a bit more.
Thought #4: Did you play this same song last Monday??? Next please!
I want to forget that my legs are flying around in circles at 20 MPH and instead I want to get lost in the awesome sound of David Guetta, Ne-Yo, and Akon telling me to Play Hard. Nothing is better than themed rides at SoulCycle because then you know exactly what you’re getting yourself into music-wise.
2. The instructor (clearly)
If they sing horribly into the mic – fail.
If they scream to “add more resistance and push harder”, yet are just dancing by their bike – fail.
I need an instructor who is peddling at the speed they are telling me to, adding on the same amount of resistance we are, but also setting an attainable pace so that halfway through I’m not dead. Part of that comes from learning how a certain instructor teaches, but the other part is the instructor going above and beyond to tell you what RPMs to hit and the effort that should be put into each upcoming song.
3. My spin outfit
Spandex are a must.
Thick socks are a must.
Cycling shoes are a must.
And a sweat towel is a serious must! <- this “sweat towel” can be a real towel, your sleeve, whatever. Nothing gets me sweating more than a tough spin class. #Overshare
Spin clothes have to be tight, since you are jumping up and down on your bike. They have to be breathable, since it gets quote toasty in the room. And they have to be cute, since you’re all in a line and no one wants to stare at see-through pants on the person in front of them.
Be considerate to your spin neighbors :) Here are some workout pieces I have my eye on:
Did I mention that a SoulCycle is opening up in the base of the building I work in?!?! I think the construction men think I’m mental since I pop my head in every day to see how it’s coming along and how soon they will open. Everyone in our office is already planning to block off lunchtime multiple times a week to go, fingers crossed they give us a corporate discount!
Are you a spin fan? What’s are some of your favorite songs to spin to?
P.S. My office is doing a Project Fit Competition with Equinox for the next month! Details to come soon and weigh-in is today (eek!). The winner gets one free month to any Equinox AND a fitbit alta HR. You know I love good competition :)
